Use of social media by librarians

Social media/networking  is exciting, always changing and also infuriating and mindboggling. one of my heros , for making sense of the ongoing barrage of sites, widgets etc is Phil Bradley. His column in the Cilip professional magazine, is also interesting and to the point. And this article also made things clearer.

However I hate to admit it, esp as a trained, qualified librarian, I am still often overwhelmed by all that is out there and the potiential usefulness of it.
I am hoping by participating in the 23Things for Professional Development programme it will start to make sense.

the Boss

For the most part I am enjoying my new job. I am getting lots of positive feedback from my collegues. I feel like I am making some real progress, however there is still a lot to do.My organising things has become like an OCD thing. I really need things to be in a place. However I find that for my work and to feel like I know what I am doing, it really helps for things to be organised and by doing the organising, I gather  and update my knowlege.

I realized I had still 2 staff members to complete 121's with, so did one today, and will do the other Monday. I really mucked up the performance appraisals. I really should have read them thoroughly before submitting them as most of "my team" had not sorrectly done them. But they all know what to do so at least if they do the correct objectives its fine.

getting into gear

Well I have been busy  with Halloween and haven't done much career work recently. I had my first experience doing a One to One meeting with one of my staff as a line manager this week. I went pretty well, and have another next week, have 4 staff on my team to get through.
I have continued to have fun updated my Scifi/fantasy bog and have made it public. ( not sure anyone but my mum has seen it yet).

Need to get back on the career development track. It's so easy to just blob out when not at work, but things are still being shaken up by the economic cuts etc , so I want to stay on top of things. My original plan was to set aside time, particularly on my days off, to study essentially. So I will have to commit to this plan, maybe on my short days do at least an hour as well..rather than watching tv..

by the way I don't think the twitter widget worked...

keeping up

I'm not really keeping up. My blogging has been and probably will keep being sporadic. The good news is I am having fun with my scifi blog:dislocatedreality. Just added a new post and new page, looking about for links too.Am going to attempt to add a twitter widget to my blog(scifi blog). Wish me luck..!

Digital Mayhem

Recently I have become addicted to the digital world. I have re-activated this blog, opened another.
Attempted to start a Wiki, explore and expand my Linkedin experience and now have rediscovered Twitter and Google Reader.

I am reading books on negotiation, and leadership, all to improve and develop my professional skills. However to make this all count I need real world experience. I need to go out there and find a way to practice what I learning. My job is a management, leadership role, so I can practice there but, I want to do more, develop through training as well.

So the upshot is I am reasearching ways to do this, either by attends courses or volunteering work, both sound good.

Now back to the mayhem!

This thing called blogging.........

Since everyone and their dogs are out there blogging, I thought I'd give it a go.

This is my second attempt at a blog-the first was a rather feeble thing created for a Library and Information Science Module project. Blogging using Blogger ought to be easier and fun, since unlike my project I won't have to fiddle around to much with HTML.

On the other hand-is that really a good thing? Probably-as I am rather lazy.

And because I am lazy I will leave this first post as is short and sweet, with a visual to finish up...

About Me

I am a librarian, and scfi fantasy fan. I have worked in Public libraries for much of my career and recenlty obtained a MSc in Library and Information Studies from City University, London.
